A HOUSE MADE OF SPLINTERS
Denmark 2022 (87 min.)
Winter and war mean this Ukrainian children’s home in Lysychansk (Donbas) near the front line is fuller than ever. The dauntless social workers have managed to create an almost magical place, where the children wait for the government to decide their fate: Will they be returned to their parents? Will they go to a foster family? Or will they be moved to a more permanent children’s home? Following on from The Distant Barking of Dogs (shown at ASN 2019), Simon Lereng Wilmont films the most difficult of moments and presents—without judgement—the children’s sorrows, expectations and tremendous ability to adapt.
“This extraordinary film about Ukrainian kids is almost too hard to bear.” –The Guardian
“It’s fair to wonder if these kids are simply too broken down from their pre-shelter experiences to be self-conscious in front of the camera…Whether the credit goes to Wilmont or trauma, the result is astonishing.” –Hollywood Reporter
