On the rise of populism, illiberalism, and the radical/far/extreme right or left in Eastern/Western Europe and elsewhere. Includes nativism, white nationalism, fundamentalism, antisemitism, Islamophobia, fascism.

 

THE REFUGEE CRISIS

On refugee politics in Europe, North America, the Middle East and elsewhere. Includes border control, securitization, political narratives, international law, and human/civil rights.

 

HISTORICAL AND POLITICAL MEMORY

On the construction and contestation of the memory of historical events, including mass violence, in sites, symbols, state policies, narratives, political culture, and academic writings.

 

IDENTITY AND POLITICAL VIOLENCE

On the role of identity (nation, ethnicity, religion, race) in massacres, riots, terrorism, insurgencies, civil wars, genocide and other instances of politically-driven violence. Includes conflict resolution, transitional justice and domestic/international courts.

 

THE RUSSIA/UKRAINE CONFLICT

On the domestic, regional and international crisis unleashed by Maidan, Crimea, and the war in Donbas. Includes refugees (IDPs), humanitarian crisis, volunteer battalions, state narratives, social media, and international conflict resolution.
